CIRS Mold Inflammation PanelWhat it can prove.

When symptoms are everywhere, immune markers help show whether the terrain is still inflamed, dysregulated, and reacting.

What This Test Measures

The CIRS Mold Panel is a group of specialized blood markers that evaluate the innate immune system's response to biotoxins. In a healthy individual, biotoxins are tagged by antibodies and eliminated. In 25% of the population (genetically susceptible), the biotoxins remain invisible to the adaptive immune system, causing the innate immune system to spin out of control, releasing highly inflammatory cytokines.

This panel measures:

  • TGF-Beta 1: An immune signaling cytokine.
  • C4a (Complement Split Product): Reflects rapid activation of the complement pathway.
  • MSH (Melanocyte-Stimulating Hormone): A regulator of hormones, sleep, and gut integrity.
  • MMP-9: Indicates deep tissue inflammation and barrier permeability.
  • VIP (Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide): Regulates pulmonary artery pressure and brain volume.

Why Doctors Skip It

Most conventional doctors are unfamiliar with the Shoemaker Protocol for CIRS. They will run basic inflammatory markers like hs-CRP or ESR, which will come back normal because biotoxins do not activate the adaptive immune pathways measured by CRP.

Optimal Ranges (with citations)

| Marker | Conventional Range | Functional Optimal | Citation | |---|---|---|---| | TGF-Beta 1 | < 3470 pg/mL | < 2380 pg/mL | Neurotoxicology and Teratology, 2016 | | C4a | < 2830 ng/mL | < 650 ng/mL | Internal Medicine Journal, 2011 | | MSH | 35 - 81 pg/mL | 35 - 81 pg/mL (Higher is better) | PEDIATRICS, 2008 | | MMP-9 | 85 - 340 ng/mL | 85 - 220 ng/mL | Journal of Environmental and Public Health, 2012 |

How to Order

  • Where to order: Quest Diagnostics or Labcorp via online platforms like Life Extension or MyMedLab.
  • Cost: $400 - $600 for the full panel.
  • CPT Codes: 83520 (TGF-Beta 1), 86160 (C4a), 84681 (MSH), 83520 (MMP-9).

What Results Mean for Your Protocol

  • High TGF-Beta 1: Avoid strenuous exercise as it drives further elevation. Use natural immune modulators like Boswellia and molecular hydrogen.
  • High MMP-9: Avoid high-amylose diets (wheat, potatoes, corn) to limit carbohydrate-driven inflammation.
  • Low MSH: Prioritize strict circadian sleep hygiene and support mucosal barriers in the gut.

My Personal Result + Interpretation

My C4a peaked at 14,500 ng/mL (normal is < 2830, optimal is < 650). This massive elevation explained why my face was constantly burning and my muscles felt like they were on fire. My MSH was suppressed at 18 pg/mL, explaining my chronic insomnia and severe food sensitivities.

As my home environment was remediated and I completed my detox sequences, my C4a dropped to 1,850 ng/mL and my sleep gradually stabilized.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CIRS?+
Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) is a multi-system, multi-symptom illness triggered by exposure to biotoxins (like mold, lyme, or blue-green algae) in genetically susceptible individuals.
What does high TGF-beta 1 indicate?+
Transforming Growth Factor Beta 1 (TGF-beta 1) is an inflammatory cytokine. High levels indicate severe immune activation, often leading to tissue remodeling, asthma-like symptoms, and autoimmunity.
Why is MSH suppression significant in CIRS?+
Melanocyte-Stimulating Hormone (MSH) controls the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, gut permeability, sleep cycles, and pain tolerance. Suppressed MSH leads to chronic insomnia, leaky gut, and fatigue.
What is the role of MMP-9 in mold illness?+
Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) is an enzyme that allows inflammatory elements to pass through biological barriers, including the blood-brain barrier, causing severe brain fog and physical pain.
How is C4a measured accurately?+
C4a must be processed by a laboratory that uses radioimmunoassay (RIA) techniques, as standard ELISA assays are highly unstable for this specific complement marker.
